St. John's-St. Luke UCC is part of the Detroit Metropolitan Association, of the Southeast Area Associations, of Michigan Conference, United Church of Christ. St. John's-St. Luke UCC was founded in 1833. The church has great historic significance as it was a part of the underground railroad, assisting many slaves across the Detroit River to freedom in Canada. They celebrated their 170th anniversary as a congregation in 2003. They are currently being served alternating weeks by 2 ministered, the Rev. Steven Archer and the Rev. James Womack. DIRECTIONS TO St. John's-St. Luke UCC: From west and northwest: Take I-96, or the Lodge to its juncture with I-75. Continue east ("northbound I-75"), staying to the left in order to continue to the Gratiot Avenue extension, leaving I-75. At Gratiot, make a sharp right turn, passing on set of traffic lights, and proceed a long block to the traffic light at Russell. Turn left, and after about 200 feet turn left again into the fenced parking lot on the southeast side of the church. From Downriver: Take I-75 to Gratiot Avenue extension and proceed as above. From north and east: Take I-75, or I-94 to I-75 south, and watch for Gratiot exit. Continue as above. To: Southeast Area AssociationsTo: DMA |
